No cash for league champs

Kumasi Asante Kotoko may just have to forget about  any prize money from the Premier League Board (PLB) for winning the Premier League last season because the organising body the league had no sponsor.

A PLB source who pleaded anonymity told the Graphic Sports yesterday, “whoever promised Kotoko of any prize must answer”.

We gave them a trophy and there was a coronation ceremony, that should be enough. Remember we had no sponsor,’ the source told the paper on phone yesterday.

The PLB’s revelation is in sharp contrast with the assertion by the acting CEO of Kotoko, Opoku Nti, who told the media last Monday that the FA was handling the matter.

Addressing their first ever media encounter ahead of  last Wednesday’s Premier League encounter against the Heart of Lions at the Baba Yara Stadium, Nti stated: “The FA president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has promised to ‘settle’ the club from this year’s First Capital Plus sponsorship”.

According to him, there has been some informal discussions with the FA president and there is a commitment by the FA to pay the money.

But the FA source said that could only be a dream because even this season ‘there is no prize money for the winner. The winner takes home a bus just as it happened last two seasons.’

The acting CEO of Kotoko is banking his hopes on the prize money to offset the club’s huge financial commitments, including player emoluments.

The Porcupine Warriors top the log on 46 points, eight points more than their closest rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak.

But keen followers of the game believe this new development could blast the morale of the Porcupine Warriors.
