The Ghanaian centre-back has missed the recent fixtures against West Ham and Manchester City, with the club citing an "unspecified injury" picked up while on international duty for Ghana.

However, according to The Athletic, the 23-year-old is actually considering his options after lengthy negotiations over a new contract to keep him at St Mary's.

Salisu joined Southampton from Real Valladolid in the summer of 2020 and has attracted interest from a number of clubs, including Manchester United and Rennes.

With just over a year left on his contract, he is said to be weighing up his future as the Saints face the prospect of relegation.

Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing the defender, but discussions have been complicated by issues with his agency, JM 10, which was acquired by CAA Base last season.

Salisu has made 80 appearances for Southampton since his arrival and has been an important player for the club as they battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

With just two wins since mid-February, the Saints are in danger of dropping down to the Championship for the first time in a decade.
