Medeama are on course to win their first ever Ghana Premier League title

Medeama, one win away from Ghana Premier League title

Tarkwa-based Medeama SC are just one win away from winning their first-ever betPawa Premier League after a 2-1 comeback win over King Faisal at the T&A Park last Friday.

Medeama’s claim for the title was strengthened by Aduana Stars’s 0-1 loss at home to Dreams FC last Saturday and Real Tamale United’s 2-1 victory Bechem at the Aliu Mahama stadium yesterday.

As it stands, Medeama sit on top of the league log with 56 points with closest challengers, Aduana, four points off while Bechem are in third position with 51 points.

Decisive games

The Tarkwa lads have two matches against FC Samartex 1996 and Tamale City to claim their biggest prize in Ghana football, and the current situation means the ‘Yellow and Mauve’ could win the title on Sunday, if they defeated regional rivals FC Samartex at the Nsekyire Park at Samreboi.

On the other hand, Bechem host sixth-placed Berekum Chelsea in a regional derby at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park on Sunday, with Aduana locking horns with Nsoatreman FC at the Nana Konamansah Park on Sunday in the respective round matches.

If Bechem fail to win at home their title dreams will be over irrespective of the outcome of the Samartex versus Medeama match, while Aduana need to win against the league’s newcomers who hold the league’s best home records and need the maximum points to survive relegation.

The battle to avoid relegation could also go to the wire, with seven clubs all battling for survival.

Relegation blues

Yesterday, Great Olympics managed to move out of the drop zone to the 15th position after a narrow 1-0 victory over neighbours, Accra Lions, at Sogakope yesterday and must win at least one of their final two games against Dreams FC (away) and Nsoatreman (home) to remain in the topflight.

With Kotoku Royals relegated, King Faisal, 16th-placed Karela United and 14th-placed Tamale City will all battle it out to avoid exiting the league.

Faisal are placed 17th with 36 points while Karela and Tamale City are on 40 and 42 points, respectively – making the final two matches must-win encounters for all of them.
