The taxi in which the Manchester City striker was travelling crashed into a lamppost, with Aguero sustaining potentially serious injuries.

Initial reports suggested Aguero was facing up to two months on the sidelines and would definitely miss tomorrow's top of the table clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

However a statement from the club has since stated he is yet to be fully assessed.

The club statement read: "Sergio Aguero will be assessed by Club doctors today after being involved in a road accident on Thursday.

"The City forward was in Holland on his day off and has sustained injuries.

"He will return to Manchester this morning and his status will be checked ahead of tomorrow's Premier League clash at Chelsea."

Aguero was in Amsterdam to watch a concert by Colombian singer Maluma when the taxi in which he was travelling to the airport careered off the road.

Reports have suggested Aguero only escaped even more serious injury because the striker was wearing a seatbelt.

Aguero's former club Independiente wished their former striker a swift recovery with a post on the club's official twitter account.

They tweeted: "Strength and prompt recovery. Everyone at Independiente is with you in this difficult moment."

The former Atletico Madrid forward, who posted a picture of himself with singer Maluma in the back of a car on Thursday evening before the crash, has seven goals in eight appearances this season.

Maluma had previously posted a photo of the two of them on Instagram which showed the player signing one of his City shirts.

This is just the latest blow for boss Pep Guardiola, who is already reeling from the news that £52million defender Benjamin Mandy, signed from Monaco in the summer, is set to miss the rest of the season.

Mendy went down injured in the 5-0 win over Crystal Palace and it has now been confirmed he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

Aguero has been in superb form for City this season and is one goal away from equalling the club's all-time leading scoring record of 178, held by Eric Brook.
