Kotoko wins SWAG cup

The Porcupine Warriors yesterday put the smiles back on the faces of their supporters when they pipped their regional rivals,  Obuasi AshGold, 1-0 to lift this year’s SIC Nyemitei SWAG Cup.

The victory ended the Aboakese boys dominance over the Oseikrom boys in recent times, earning the Kumasi lads the bragging rights for the moment.

Playing before a big crowd which included the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is the the life patron of Kotoko, the homesters needed  a late goal from a free kick converted by Eric Donkor to win the day.

Donkor, who had wasted lots of chances in the early part of the game, rose to the occasion when it mattered most to score the winning goal.

Indeed, the match appeared to be heading for the lottery of penalty shout outs, when  Donkor lobbed the ball past the defensive wall of Ashgold,  beyond the reach of Nana Osei Bonsu in posts for the Aboakese lads who had been on the pitch for barely a minute.

He was brought on by the Ashgold bench for Robert Dabuo when the game was heading for the penalities.

Before then, it was a ding-dong affair between the two teams with some of the players exhibiting individual skills.

Though Kotoko looked the more purposeful, their efforts yielded little result as they wasted the chances that came their way until the very last minute.

It was a sweet revenge for the Porcupines Warriors who were denied the Otumfuo Cup by AshGold some two months ago when they beat Kotoko 3-1.
