GTV, Metro TV and Kwese TV to show World Cup

Ghana Television (GTV) in partnership with Metro TV and Kwese TV have secured the terrestrial rights (Free To Air) to the 2018 World Cup to be staged from June 14 to July 15 in Russia.

“With this right, no other TV station in Ghana can broadcast the World Cup using the terrestrial platform except these three television stations named above,” Mr Johnnie Aryeetey, Director of GTV said in Accra.

He explained that for the first time in the history of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) the World Cup will be broadcast on three of its fixed TV channels namely GTV, GTV Sports+ and Obonu TV, a GaDangme channel.

According to Mr Aryeetey, who is also the chairman of the World Cup Committee, commentary on Obonu TV will be in GaDangme for which reason the discussions accompanying the commentary will be in the same language.

He explained however, that those who have satellite rights could watch the matches with decoders.

The launch of the Russia 2018 matches on TV, which was held last Friday in Accra, was meant to inform the general public about the opportunity to watch the World Cup live on three television stations.

“It was months of planning and negotiations with the rights owners and finally we have concluded the deal. Sponsors and all Ghanaians who wish to be associated with the broadcast of the World Cup could contact GBC or any of the other two stations.”

“Ghana’s Black Stars are not there, but Africa has five representatives in Russia and we are bringing to viewers the African connection. Big brother Nigeria is there, Egypt is there and football enthusiasts are yearning to see Mo Salah on the world stage. Morocco, Tunisia and Senegal are all there, therefore, Africa has a lot to be interested about at the Russia 2018,” Mr Aryeetey indicated.
