Ghana’s athletics team will headline a packed programme today at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as some of the country’s biggest track stars begin their medal quest alongside competitors in boxing, swimming, weightlifting and para athletics.
Leading the charge is Benjamin Azamati, who makes his second Commonwealth Games appearance after finishing 4th, just outside the medal zone in Birmingham 2022.
Determined to claim a first medal at this level, the immediate past national record holder enters the men’s 100m in impressive form, having clocked a season’s best of 10.00 seconds. This makes Azamati one of the fastest men in the field and a genuine contender for a place in the final.
Joining him is Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, who will be making his Commonwealth Games debut. Ghana’s fastest man in history has enjoyed a breakthrough season, posting a personal and season’s best of 9.86 seconds, a performance that has established him among the world’s elite sprinters and raised expectations of a strong showing in Glasgow.
Completing Ghana’s men’s sprint team is Isaac Botsio, another veteran of Birmingham 2022, while debutant Deborah Acheampong also begins her campaign in the women’s 100m heats. Later in the evening, West Texas A&M star Abigail Abugire will seek qualification from the women’s 800m heats.
In boxing, four Ghanaians, all debutants, step into the ring in the round of 16, each aiming to emulate compatriot Amadu Mohammed and move one victory away from the medal zone.
Ramatu Quaye meets Canada’s Amber-Jane Wall in the women’s 51kg division, Ebenezer Ankrah contests the men’s 60kg bout against Nicholas Devlin of Scotland, Precious Akai Nettey faces Elijah Qiokata of Fiji in the men’s 70kg category, while
Desmond Pappoe takes on Josh Tonga of Tonga in the men’s 80kg contest.
The day’s programme also features Emmanuel Boateng in the men’s 71kg weightlifting final, where he will be chasing a podium finish.
In swimming, national record holder Nubia Adjei competes in the women’s 50m backstroke, while para swimmer Promise “Wonder Atsu” Aheto takes to the pool for the men’s 100m breaststroke SB9, hoping to reach the evening final.
Ghana’s strongest medal prospect today could come in para athletics, where Zinabu Issah contests the Women’s F57 Shot Put final.
The experienced thrower will be aiming to deliver the country’s first para athletics medal of the Games.
With athletes competing across five sports, today promises to be one of Team Ghana’s busiest and most significant days at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games as the country chases its first medal.
