Police Ladies aim to prove their worth

Police Ladies, bronze medallists at the 2017 HockeyAfrica Cup for the Club Champions tournament in Accra, are looking forward to holding their own against the continent’s elite clubs when they descend on the Nigerian capital of Abuja to compete for the title this year.

Runners-up at in the ladies division of the 2018 Sapholda Hockey League, Police Ladies will represent Ghana alongside Royal Ladies of Ghana Revenue Authority in the December 15 - 23 tournament, which features 16 men’s and women’s teams.

A key player of Police Ladies, Nafisatu Umaru, told the Daily Graphic that the tournament in Abuja would see the best of Police Ladies as they seek to improve upon their achievement last year at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Stadium in Accra.

“We did our best in the last tournament held in Accra but we could only settle for bronze. This time, however, we are more determined to go beyond that [bronze] to bring honour to Ghana,” she assured.

On their way to winning bronze on home soil last year, Police Ladies won four out of six matches, drew one and lost one against Royal Ladies.

In their buildup to the Abuja competition, they won the recent Homowo Festival Cup in Accra.

According to Nafisatu, her teammates were responding positively at training and were hopeful of rising to the challenge despite the stiff competition anticipated in Abuja.

Besides Nafisatu, Police Ladies will be counting on players such as Juwaila Acquah, Faustina Aggrey, Cecilia Ofoe, Martha Sarfoa, Serwaa Boakye and Evelyn Fiador Selom to fulfill their dreams.
