Ghana names C’wealth Games team as Black Bombers target record medal haul

Ghana's Black Bombers have set their sights on a record-breaking medal haul at next month's Commonwealth Games after unveiling a formidable 10-member squad backed by months of intensive preparation and bold expectations from boxing officials.

The Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) believes the national team is better equipped than ever to challenge for honours in Glasgow, with President Dauda Fuseni insisting the fighters have undergone the most comprehensive build-up in recent memory.

"We believe this team can perform exceptionally well and win medals," Fuseni told Graphic Sports. "This very edition, the boxers have prepared very well. They are also leaving Ghana early enough to continue their preparations abroad, which gives us every reason to be confident."

That confidence stems from a rigorous training programme that began in April when the Black Bombers opened camp at the Winneba Sports College following the 2026 National Individual Championships held in February and March.

The squad's progress was further underlined in May when Ghana hosted and outclassed Nigeria in a preparatory boxing tournament in Accra, providing an encouraging benchmark against one of Africa's traditional boxing powers.

Now, with the Ghana Olympic Committee confirming that Team Ghana will depart on July 3 for a three-week pre-Games training camp in Ireland, the Black Bombers are entering the final phase of preparations with expectations rising rapidly.

The squad combines proven pedigree with emerging talent and is spearheaded by two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Abdul Wahid Omar, who will make a record fourth appearance at the Games in the 65kg division.

Also carrying Ghana's hopes are African Games gold medallist Amadu Mohammed (55kg) and African Youth champion Desmond Pappoe (80kg), both regarded as strong contenders for podium finishes.

The men's team is completed by Ebenezer Ankrah (60kg), who has represented Ghana at both the 2024 IBA World Youth Championships and the 2025 IBA World Men's Boxing Championships, alongside promising prospect Precious Akai Nettey (70kg), Jibril Muntari (90kg) and Daniel Plange (+90kg).

Ghana's women's challenge will be led by Policewoman Ramatu Quaye (51kg), Ghana Army boxer Nancy Banfo (54kg) and rising youngster Adelaide Djabatey (57kg).

The team will be guided by one of Ghana boxing's most respected figures, Ofori Asare, who serves as head coach. He will be assisted by Charles Quartey, Daniel Lartekwei Lartey and Benjamin Amanor Tetteh.

While federation officials are confident of multiple podium finishes, GBF Second Vice-President Solomon Otoo Lartey, popularly known as Great Mangola, has raised the stakes even higher by publicly declaring an ambitious medal target.

"We are expecting at least three gold, two silver and two bronze medals," he said.

"We want to achieve something that has never been done before. We also ask Ghanaians to remember us in their prayers."

It is an audacious prediction, but one that reflects the growing belief within Ghana boxing that the Black Bombers are poised to deliver one of the nation's strongest-ever Commonwealth Games performances.

The road to Glasgow will now run through Ireland, where the squad will complete its final preparations and acclimatisation programme from July 4 to July 20 before heading to Scotland carrying both expectation and the weight of a proud boxing tradition.
