GFA ready to appear before Parliament

Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, says the association has no case to answer to parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) over a $1,242 debt the ministry of the Foreign Affairs claims the football regulatory body owes it.

However, he has given an assurance that the FA is ready to appear before the legislature to state its case.

According to Mr Nyantakyi, any expense incurred on any national team on international duty is settled by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and, thus, the FA cannot be held for a bill standing in the name of the senior national football team, Black Stars.

Last Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affair, Hannah Tetteh told PAC that the GFA had refused to settle the bill on two cooks hired to render service for the Stars during an international assignment in Brazzaville,Congo, in 2011.

Ms Tetteh told the committee that her ministry had to pay the cooks to avoid possible embarrassment to the country.

“I hope if the FA is watching this they will be inspired to come and make a refund of $1,242.74 as quickly as possible so that the bill will be cleared,” she stated.

However, Mr Nyantakyi was adamant that the Ministry of Youth and Sports was rather responsible for such expenses.

“The GFA is not responsible for payment of expenses incurred on the national teams. That’s why there is always a purse holder from the Ministry of Youth and Sports who takes care of such incidentals, so the GFA cannot be held responsible as the impression being created.

“Nonetheless, the association is ready to appear before the Public Accounts Committee when invited,’’he told the Graphic Sports on Tuesday.

“It was unfair for the Foreign Minister and the committee to tag the FA as being guilty when in fact the inquiries or blame should have been directed to the agency responsible for holding the national teams’ purse.

We are yet to be notified but if indeed we are, we will go and set the records straight,” Mr Nyantakyi added.
