The Democracy Cup will see Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko clash on Wednesday, 17 July 2024, in an event marking the 30th anniversary of Ghana's parliamentary democracy.

The inaugural match is themed "30 Years of Parliamentary Democracy Under the 4th Republic: The Journey Thus Far."

In an interview, Mr. Woyome, a Ranking Member on the Youth and Sports Committee of Parliament, emphasized the role of sports in engaging citizens and enhancing their involvement in governance.

"Protecting our democracy and deepening our understanding of it is crucial for the development of our country," he stated. "Sports, recognized by the United Nations as a tool for development, will help people appreciate and understand democracy."

Mr. Woyome highlighted that the Democracy Cup aims to give a voice to the voiceless and enable citizens to influence the governance process. "Parliament, as a key arm of government, must commemorate this milestone annually to underscore the permanence of our democracy," he added.

He encouraged fans of the two rival football clubs to attend the match in large numbers, promising a unifying and enjoyable event.

The much-anticipated Democracy Cup will also feature a curtain-raiser match between Parliament and former Black Stars players. The winner of the Hearts and Kotoko match will have the opportunity to play against DC United in the USA later this year.
