Decisive Commonwealth Games qualifier: Legon to host Dean Hayes Classic Saturday
Ghana's leading athletes descend on the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday for the Dean Hayes International Athletics Classic, representing the final domestic opportunity to secure qualification marks for the Commonwealth Games and other major international championships.
With national team places still on the line, the third National Open Championships promises far more than medals and podium finishes. Every sprint, jump and throw could determine who earns the right to wear Ghana's colours on some of the sport's biggest stages later this year.
The invitation-only competition will bring together the country's top track and field athletes alongside a select group of international competitors, transforming Legon into the focal point of Ghanaian athletics for a day of high-stakes competition.
Far more than a routine national championship, the Dean Hayes Classic has become the final local opportunity for athletes to achieve the standards required for consideration for the Commonwealth Games in Scotland and the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Oregon, USA, in August.
As a result, pressure will be at its highest when the competition begins. For athletes hovering around qualification standards, Saturday represents a final audition. For selectors, it offers one last opportunity to assess form, readiness and competitive temperament before naming squads for major international assignments.
The championships are being staged in honour of the late Dean Hayes (1937-2022), the revered American coach whose influence on Ghanaian athletics extended across generations.
Hayes spent 56 years building the track and field programme at the Middle Tennessee State University into one of the most respected in the United States. Along the way, he played a pivotal role in the development of numerous Ghanaian athletes, forging a lasting relationship with Ghana Athletics and becoming one of the sport's most influential allies.
The programme features a packed schedule of track and field events expected to attract significant interest from coaches, selectors, scouts and athletics enthusiasts eager to assess the country's leading talents.
Yet, the event is not solely about established stars. The championships will also provide a platform for the next generation through a series of high-profile schools' competitions designed to showcase emerging talent.
Among the highlights are the secondary school 4x100m Championship relays for Under-18 and Under-20 boys and Under-20 girls, events expected to inject youthful energy into an already competitive programme.
Particular attention will focus on the Greater Accra SHS Bragging Rights Relay, where eight selected schools from across the capital will renew some of the fiercest rivalries in Ghanaian school athletics.
