Clottey: Commey must prioritise money over title ambitions

Former International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight champion, Joshua Clottey has played down the potential of Richard Commey winning another world title, saying Commey’s career took a nosedive after his defeat to Vasyl Lomachenko in December 2021.

Clottey said the former IBF lightweight titlist had been affected by the defeat to the hard-hitting Ukrainian and believes it will be difficult for his compatriot to win a second world title at the twilight of his career.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports, Clottey called on Commey to concentrate on making a lot of money from the sport before calling it quits.

“I think he was really affected by that defeat to Lomachenko because since then, he has not been able to come back stronger,” said Clottey.
“Boxing is like that sometimes and you have to know where your strength lies at the moment when these things happen.

“I think he should concentrate on making money before considering retirement because I think it will be difficult for him to win another title,” he added.

Commey was stopped by Jose Ramirez in round 11 last March during a WBC super lightweight title eliminator in California.

The 36-year-old Ghanaian is winless in his last three bouts since moving to the140 pounds division after his one-sided defeat to Lomachenko.
