Bombers have slim medal chance - Foh-Amoaning

A former chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), Moses Foh-Amoaning, has discounted Black Bombers’ chances of winning a medal at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham later this month.

He believed that lack of competition and exposure would make the Bombers struggle at the Games, especially at a time when some juvenile and amateur fighters were being exploited by the professional body governing the sport.

“I don’t see their (Bombers) chances of winning any medal; they lack competition and they don’t appear to be properly trained for the Games,” the legal luminary told the Daily Graphic in an exclusive telephone interview in Accra last Friday.

He, therefore, called on Bombers’ lead trainer, Coach Kwasi Ofori Asare, to dig deep to ensure that the team performed creditably at the Games.

Residential camping

He also urged the authorities to ensure an immediate residential camping for the Bombers to enable them engage in serious sparring competitions in order to be game for the quadrennial competition.

“They need sparring badly and a good sparring such that they must also engage in mock bouts, competitive fights and other serious competitions to stand a chance of winning a medal at the Games,” he explained.

Mr Foh-Amoaning, who co-introduced a marquee youth boxing league dubbed: ‘Bukom Fist of Fury’ in Greater Accra a couple of years ago, however, stressed that the ongoing De-Luxy Boxing League would hurt the chances of upcoming juvenile and amateur boxers.

“When you look at what they are doing at the ‘so-called’ De-Luxy Boxing League, you could clearly see that there is no chance for youth boxing as juvenile and amateur talents lack the clear pattern of grooming, survival and betterment,” he noted.
