George Amoako

Amoako in line for PLB job

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is expected to name today a vice chairman for the Professional League Board (PLB) in fulfilment of its mandate ahead of the commencement of the Premier League next Sunday.

The football controlling body, by the powers conferred on it by congress, must appoint the chairman and vice-chairman of the PLB, having already appointed Ashford Tettey-Oku, a former vice chairman of the board, to succeed Welbeck Abra-Appiah.

Among the names being considered are George Amoako, an Executive Member of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), JF Mensah, a member of the FA’s Executive Committee of the FA and Derek Saki, a former member of the PLB.

Indeed, Mr Mensah, appears the most experienced among the candidates under consideration having served on the board for nearly a decade. But his current position on the Executive Committee and other sub-committees will conspire against his appointment by the FA , according to sources seem not ready to breach convention to appoint someone from the ExCo.

Besides, Mr Mensah is a director of Ebusua Dwarfs as well as the Accra Representative of the Cape Coast-based club, positions which disqualify him for appointment to the office of the vice chairman of the PLB as it requires a person without a known affiliation to a club.

Incidentally, each of the 16 participating clubs has a representative on the PLB, a reason that makes the appointment of another club representative as the body’s vice chairman quite superfulous.

Indeed, as the source told the Graphic Sports yesterday “had Ashford Tettey-Oku stiil been the administrative manager of Accra Hearts there was no way that he would have appointed him vice-chairman and the substantive chairman now.”

The situation narrows the chances to Messrs Amoako and Saki, but it appears the former is favourite to get the appointment as Saki might not resonante among the football fraternity. Amoako’s experience as a football administrator stretches from his days with Kumasi Asante Kotoko through Kumasi King Faisal and lately with Ashgold.

He has also served on several sub-committees of the GFA  including the Finance Committee.
