Akuffo wins Cowbell Cycling Challenge

 

Teenage cycling sensation, Frank Akuffo, made a sprint finish to clinch the 84-kilometre Cowbell Cycling Challenge held last Monday in Accra.

Akuffo, 19, along with his Velo Stars teammate Isaac Sackey, led a pack of 98 riders, but the younger cyclist crossed the finish line first at Teshie Mobil in a time of one hour, 57 minutes and 23 seconds.

Sackey, who finished second, was trailed by Emmanuel Sackey, Lawrence Agyei and Steven Kabu in third, fourth and fifth places respectively.

In an interview Akuffo who was presented with GH¢ 2,000.00, and some Cowbell products, a trophy, a gold medal and a mountain bike from Decathlon, commended his trainer, David Sealy, for helping to improve his sprinting, making it possible for him to win the race and the prize money of GH¢ 2000.00".

He said he would use the money to purchase a new racing bike to enable him to qualify for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

The top 15 cyclists of the race also received cash prizes, products from Cowbell and Decathlon vouchers, while young cyclists, Joseph Neequaye and Bismark Aryeetey, were also rewarded for finishing the race.

The cyclists maintained an average speed of 44 kilometres per hour during the race which started at 9a.m. at the Black Star Square.

The Sales and Marketing Director of Promasidor, producers of Cowbell, Timo Van Vooren reiterated his commitment to funding the sport, urging the cyclists to venture into triathlon, a multisport event which features cycling, running and swimming.
