Afriyie named GFA vice-president

George Afriyie has been named the vice-president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) at a the meeting of the Executive Committee (ExCo) yesterday.

The president of the GFA, Kwesi Nyantakyi, named Afriyie as the vice-president for a four-year term at the first meeting of the newly-formed Executive Committee to discuss the direction of Ghana football for the next four years.

He takes over from Fred Crentsil, who lost out at the recent ExCo elections on the ticket of Techiman City.

 

Afriyie, 45, was named by the GFA president in accordance with Article 30.3 of the First Amendment of the GFA Statutes passed by Congress on December 30, 2014, which states that: "At the maiden meeting of the Executive Committee, the president shall appoint from the membership of the Executive the vice president of the GFA and three other members who shall together with the President form the five members of the Emergency Committee."

The new GFA vice president has a vast experience in football administration in Ghana after serving in various leadership positions with a number of clubs in the country, including Swedru All Blacks, Accra Great Olympics and Liberty Professionals.

He has also worked with the various national teams in leadership positions.

Afriyie, who is the current chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, served on various management committees of the national teams. He served as the management committee chairman for the Black Meteors, Black Satellites, as well as a member of the Premier League Board and the Division One League Board.

He is a current member of the CAF Marketing and TV Rights Committee.

Meanwhile, Eddy Doku, Nanabanyin Benjamin Eyison and Kweku Eyiah have also been named as members of the Executive Committee, to join Nyantakyi and Afriyie on the five-man body.
