AFCON 2019: Kwasi Appiah makes 3 changes to starting XI for Guinea Bissau

Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah has made three changes to the Black Stars starting XI for their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 must-win clash against Guinea Bissau at 4 pm today.

Two of the changes are enforced - with winger Samuel Owusu replacing Newcastle United man Christian Atsu who has been ruled out of the tournament with injury and striker Kwabena Owusu earning a start in place of Kwadwo Asamoah after an impressive cameo versus Cameroun on Saturday.

In defence Belgium-based, Joseph Aidoo will make his AFCON debut alongside experienced centre back John Boye who returns after serving a one-game suspension.

Aidoo starts ahead of Jonathan Mensah who failed a late fitness test and Kassim Nuhu Adams who received his second yellow card of the tournament in the 0-0 draw against Cameroun.

Analysis

(4-3-3): Richard Ofori; Andy Yiadom, Baba Rahman, John Boye, Joseph Aidoo, Mubarak Wakaso, Thomas Partey, Andre Ayew; Samuel Owusu, Kwabena Owusu and Jordan Ayew.

Appiah appears to have lined up his charges in a 4-3-3 formation which will rely on the pace of the two Owusus on the flanks with Jordan Ayew playing through the middle.

Skipper Andre Ayew is expected to operate as the most advanced of three midfielders with Mubarak Wakaso and Thomas Partey operating at the base of midfield in front of the back four. Atletico Madrid midfielder Partey will likely function in a box-to-box role with Wakaso having more defensive responsibilities.

In defence, Baba Rahman retains his role at left-back after impressive against Cameroun in the second game of Group F while Andy Yiadom will shuttle down the flanks at right-back.

John Boye and Joseph Aidoo will attempt to forge a solid central defensive pairing in front of Richard Ofori for the Stars who have looked shaky in defence since the start of their campaign.
