Achimota Squash Club and Lagos counterparts forge partnership to drive West African squash development

Ghana's Achimota Squash Club has initiated a partnership with their Nigerian counterparts at the Squash Section of the Lagos Country Club, in a significant step toward advancing the development of squash across West Africa.

The affiliation, which involves discussions and collaborative activities, is expected to facilitate friendly matches, coaching exchanges, juvenile squash development programmes, and knowledge sharing between the two clubs. The partnership aims to strengthen ties between the squash communities of both nations while contributing to the broader vision of making West Africa a competitive force in international squash.

Both countries have a rich squash tradition, with Lagos hosting some of Nigeria's most active squash communities, including OTrafford Squash Club and other leading squash sections within the city. Achimota Squash Club has earned a reputation as one of Ghana's fastest-growing squash clubs, actively supporting national team players, renovating squash facilities, and organising invitational tournaments across the country. The club is also the brain behind the High School Squash League in Ghana.

The collaboration comes at a crucial time as squash prepares for its Olympic debut at the 2028 Summer Olympics, creating fresh opportunities for West African nations to nurture talent capable of competing on the world stage.

According to officials involved in the initiative, the affiliation aims to promote regular Ghana–Nigeria squash competitions, develop juvenile and youth talent, encourage greater corporate sponsorship for the sport, improve coaching and officiating standards, and expand awareness of squash as a healthy and economically viable sport.

The partnership is expected to strengthen ties between the squash communities of Ghana and Nigeria while contributing to the broader vision of making West Africa a competitive force in international squash. For a sport that has long played second fiddle to football and athletics in the region, the timing of this collaboration could not be more significant. With the Olympic spotlight approaching, the partnership between Achimota and Lagos Country Club represents a deliberate effort to build the foundations for sustained growth and regional competitiveness.
