Nana Asare demoted to Gent second team

Asare, 34, has already been told by manager Win De Decker that he is no longer needed in the first team as he is past his prime and they have acquired his replacement though he has one year left on his existing contract.

Graphic Sports Online understands that Gent are struggling to get suitors for Asare and have therefore demoted him to train with the second team in order to maintain his fitness he secures a new deal during this transfer window.

He was the skipper of Gent until last year when he voluntarily gave the captain's armband to Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe who had also shown great leadership qualities.

In all, Asare has made 272 appearances, provided 16 assists and scored four goals for Gent since his 2013 move from Dutch side Utrecht. Two months ago, he was voted by fans of Gent in their official Best 11 players of the past decade.

The defender previously featured for Feyenoord Ghana (WAFA), Feyenoord Rotterdam, Royal Antwerp, KV Mechelen as well as FC Utrecht.

Asare has been one of the most consistent Ghanaian players in Europe over the past 10 years, although he has made only one senior appearance for Ghana
