Lampard challenges Hudson-Odoi to work hard

While other English starlets such as Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood and Bukayo Saka of Arsenal impress, Hudson-Odoi has appeared only once since the Premier League’s restart.

That was as a 76th-minute substitute in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Watford, with Pulisic and Willian starting Chelsea’s last four matches, including the FA Cup quarter-final win over Leicester.

‘He really needs to work hard daily in training,’ Chelsea manager Lampard said of Hudson-Odoi, who was arrested for breaking lockdown protocols in May.

‘Do the right things daily and when he gets his opportunities, whether from the bench or the start, have an input in games and make a difference. We’re seeing at the moment what Pulisic and Willian are doing and when Callum comes into the team or comes on, he has to show something similar.’

N’Golo Kante is set to miss Chelsea’s trip to Crystal Palace on Tuesday night, giving Jorginho the chance to make his first appearance since the restart. The Italy international was a mainstay of the midfield before lockdown but has been an unused substitute in the last four matches.

Asked why that was, Lampard replied: ‘I don’t want to go into personal details of positional and tactical reasons why I pick a team. I just pick a team how I see best.

‘With Jorginho, he does not have to do anything different. He trains well, he shows me that he’s good for the group, on and off the pitch, he’s vice-captain of the club.

‘It’s purely my choice from what I see in the games and how I want the make-up of my midfield to be.’
