Hockey: World body celebrates Tengey
Describing Mr Tengey as a volunteer with a passion to unearth the potentials of the youth and nurture them to become stars, the Federation said such volunteers “rarely get the recognition they deserve, which is why FIH is paying glowing tribute to this hockey volunteer with such an article highlighting the work of such an unsung hero”.
Recalling the contributions of Mr Tengey to the development of hockey in Ghana, the tribute signed by Senior FIH Communications Manager, Nicholas Maingot, said while Mr Tengey loved the sport, he acknowledged that he would not make the national team.

The statement said it was for this reason that in 1977 Mr Tengey started a hockey team and together with his friends he collected hockey sticks, balls and other equipment and lunched a neighbourhood hockey team, Pozo Sticks, in honour of his brother Anthony Tengey, known in hockey circles as Pozo, who was a national hockey player.
“This team grew and eventually participated in the Greater Accra Hockey League, and in 1993, Tengey started a development programme for young girls and boys to nurture their potentials in the sport. He, therefore, became one of the pioneers of the now famous neighbourhood youth teams that have sprung up in Ghana., the sport’s world body said in a statement.
The statement said Tengey took up a dual role of team manager and coach and used his personal resources and lobbied friends and relations to help provide kits and equipment for the teams. In 1989, he volunteered to become the groundsman/manager at the national hockey stadium and ensured that the facility was ready for hockey matches”.
The world hockey federation delved into Mr Tengey’s role as a technical officer for the sport fro 1990 when he became involved in technical duties and over time rose to become a national rated official.
“Louis officiated at several Africa Cup for Clubs Competitions as a technical official and in 2007, he was a judge at the Africa Olympic Qualifier held in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2012, he was also a technical officer at the U-20 Africa Cup for Nations,” recalled FIH.
It said Mr Tengey’s role as a team manager for the national U-20 side propelled the team to achieve honours in competitions, particularly, during the Africa Cup for Club Championship in 1984.
