Special Olympics World Games: Team Ghana begin preparation

Eight Intellectually Disabled Floor Ball athletes have begun intensive preparation for the Special Olympics World Winter Games scheduled for Kazan, Russia, in January 2022.

They are Justice Zidah, Samuel Ackon, Alfred Bosompim from Twin-City Special School in Sekondi-Takoradi. Fidel Manyo from Gbi Kledjo Special School, Hohoe, Chris Bentum from Aboom Methodist Unit, Cape Coast, and Isaac Okyere from Dzorwulu Special School in Accra.
The rest are Elijah Nii Badu Ayin and Eliah Amesawu, also from Dzorwulu Special School.

Two other athletes were selected as reserves to beef up the team in case of injury or infirmity among the core athletes slated for the games.

They are made up of Ernest Wood from Aboom Methodist Unit and Liah Amesawu from Dzorwulu Special School.

The team was selected after the Special Education Division, in collaboration with Special Olympics Ghana, organised a justification exercise for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities among five schools and three units in five regions.

Briefing the Daily Graphic about their preparation, a member of Special Olympics Ghana, Ms Belinda Bukari, said the National Floor Ball Advancement Games would be committed to train Team Ghana to fly the flag of Ghana high at the tournament.

Describing the justify-your-inclusion exercise as a success, Ms Bukari said the Special Education Division of the Ghana Education Service would continuously work together with Special Olympics Ghana to ensure that the national athletes were adequately prepared towards the upcoming Winter Games.
