Opoku named FIH Best Young Player

A striker with the national female hockey team, Elizabeth Opoku, was adjudged the Best Young Female Player at the just-ended FIH World League series in Nairobi, Kenya.

Although Ghana’s Black Sticks could not make any significant impact on the tournament, Elizabeth brought smiles to the faces of Ghanaians as she was named the best young player of the competition.

She was recently awarded Best Female Hockey Player by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and also claimed the Best Player and Top Scorer awards at the Africa Cup of Nations 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya.

A student of the University of Ghana, the Black Sticks star played for the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) ladies team for the past four years and emerged top scorer in 2011 Greater Accra Hockey League.

In 2010 she was adjudged the promising player in the Chairman’s Challenge Cup and awarded the top female sports personality at the University of Ghana.

A multi-talented athlete, 20-year-old Elizabeth is not only a hockey star, but also a middle distance runner who plays football, handball and netball for the University of Ghana teams.
