Minister: We are committed to paying Appiah

The Ministry of Youth and Sports says it is putting in place measures to sort out monies owed former Black Stars coach Kwasi Appiah.

Isaac Asiamah, the sector minister, has revealed that his outfit has engaged Appiah on the way forward to pay his salary arrears.

The former Black Stars trainer had complained about the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) reluctance to clear outstanding salaries and bonuses estimated at $185,000 after the end of his reign last December.

This the Communications Director of the GFA, Henry Asante Twum, refuted by stating that the state bears the cost of paying national team coaches.

However, at a press briefing on government’s decision to ease restrictions on non-contact sports, Mr Asiamah clarified that the ministry was always committed to fulfilling its part of financial agreement with coach Appiah.

He argued that the government had proved its support to Coach Appiah over the course of his two-year contract by paying all his remuneration and pledged its readiness to clear the arrears as soon as possible.

“It will be wrong to state that we don’t want to pay him because we have supported him right from the start of his contract.”

“We paid all his two-year salaries and bonuses before the extension of his contract and that is how come we owe him,” Asiamah noted.

“I can assure you that we will pay him his due for all the good work he had done for our dear nation,” he added.
