The presence of two expatriate technical men on Ghana's Black Stars bench may have sent the wrong signals that assistant coach, Maxwell Konadu's job was under threat, but the chairman of the team's management committee says it is safe.
Former Jamaican international, Jimmy Lawrence and Briton, Gerrard Hughes are part of the technical team helping head coach Avram Grant to execute the Stars' campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and the two are usually in the thick of affairs during the team’s training and at their warm-ups, raising curiosity over Konadu's present role now in the team.
Mr Afriyie, who is also a member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Emergency Committee, explained to the Daily Graphic that the two men have been brought on specifically to beef up support for Grant at this competition and that their services will be over once the team's campaign ended.
"Hughes is a video analyst and also a UEFA Licence A coach who has worked with clubs like Liverpool and the Australian national team.
“Lawrence on the other hand, is a former player who has now specialised in physical training. The coach specifically asked for their services at this competition after assessing the strength of his technical team. The contract is on while the Stars campaign is on. They are not in the team to take over Maxwell Konadu's job. I can give the fullest assurance that Konadu's job is very safe," he said
