An uninspiring Liberty Professionals side yesterday managed to beat visiting New Edubiase United 1-0 to move to the sixth position of the league at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Michael Appiah’s goal in the 35th minute was what the host needed to bag the maximum points after they were subjected a total football torture by New Edubiase with play maker, Asiedu Attobrah, leading the orchestra.
Against the run of play, Appiah and Soufian Abubakar exchanged passes before the lanky striker beat Ben Mensah to slot the ball home for the first goal.
New Edubiase were not daunted by the goal as they pressed for the equaliser, Bernard Ofori twice missed a scoring opportunity while Emmanuel Mensah also watched in agony as his volley on the 42nd minute rattled the woodwork.
When both sides return from recess, Liberty coach, George Lamptey, made two quick substitutions bringing on Francis Mawuli and Louise Marfo for Tuaha Sheik Hizzle and Soufian Aboubakar to help change their fortunes.
But it was only temporary as New Edubiase also introduced Bright Mends and Nasir Lamin who came to add more urgency to their attack. For most part of the interval, they pinned Liberty to their own half forcing their central defensive duo of Alfred Nelson and Tuffour Frimpong to do extra work.
And as the sparse crowd at the stadium urged Liberty on, they occasionally caught New Edubiase United on a counter attack but a tired Appiah and Yaw Clevor could not capitalised on it.
However, Edubiase’s resolve to cancel the lead became intense as they mounted pressure on the host with Attobrah causing problems for their backline but the much anticipated equaliser never came.
