Accra Hearts of Oak laboured to record their sixth home win of the season after a 2-1 victory over Bechem United at the Accra Sports stadium yesterday .
Emmanuel Hayford’s second minute goal might have given the excited Hearts fans a false sense of a goal harvest only for their celebration to be cut short four minutes later when the visitors cancelled the lead. But the Phobians found their voices again in the second half when Robin Gnagne restored their lead and handed them the winning goal from a spot kick.
In the sixth minute Bechen drew level after Prosper Donkor latched onto the ball outside the Hearts penalty box before releasing a carpet shot past Hearts goalie, Tetteh Luggard, for the equaliser.
Buoyed by the equaliser, the visitors occasionally asked questions of the Hearts defence, but later the home side gained their composure with magnificent play by Eric Kumi and Winful Cobbinah sending Bechem backline into some desperate defending.
Hearts again turned defence into attack in the 28th minute after Kumi sprinted with the ball almost from the centre line but shot wide much the the dismay of the fans.
The game occasionally swung from one side to the other and it was the Phobians who survived a scary nine minutes into the second half when substitute Abdul Razak Agyiri’s shopt at goal hitting the goal post with goalkeeper Tetteh in wonderland.
Hearts’ late charge yielded result in the 76th minute when Cobbinah went tumbling in the Bechem penalty box after what looked like an innocuous challenge by Patrick Cole. Referee O.B Amankwah awarded a spot kick which was converted by Gnagne.
