Accra Hearts of Oak progressed to the next stage of the CAF Confederation Cup with a surprise 3-2 away victory over Olympique de Ngor to set up a date with Malian side, Djoliba AC de Bamako.
The Phobians went into last Saturday’s away clash at the Stade Caroline Faye, in the Senegalese city of Mbour, with a fragile 2-1 lead from the first leg clash in Accra a fortnight ago, but Herbert Addo’s charges took the game to the home side and stunned Olympique Ngor with an impressive second half display to seal qualification to the 1/8th round.
After a goal down at halftime, Hearts equalised through Eric Kumi’s 60th minute strike. The Phobians went ahead through skipper Robin Gnagne who scored from a spot kick.
The home side cancelled the lead deep into the second half , but the Ghanaian side had the last laugh as Paul Acquah stunned the home crowd with Hearts’ winning goal in the dying minutes of the game to hand his side an important victory on a 5-3 aggregate.
Hearts, who were the maiden winners of the competition in 2005, will travel to the Stade Modibo Keita in Bamako to face Djoliba in the first leg of the 1/8th the finals on April 19 before they host the return leg on May 3.
Djoliba progressed to the 1/8th finals after eliminating Angolan side PetroJet 2-1 on aggregate.
The winner of that encounter will qualify into the group stage (money zone) of the competition.
