Season Five of the National Women’s League (NWL) got off to an impressive start last weekend as four players scored a brace to help their respective clubs to record good wins.
Ampem Darkoa’s Priscilla Okyere, Hasaacas Ladies’ Lily Niber-Lawrence, Ashtown Ladies’ Ruth Anima and Adiza Mustapha of Soccer Intellectuals recorded double goals for their sides to cruise to victory.
Okyere, who is debuting for Ampem Darkoa after joining the champions from rivals Fabulous Ladies, scored two of Ampem Darkoa’s goals in their 4-2 win over Lepo Ladies, while Niber-Lawrence also scored twice to cushion southern zone champions, Hasaacas to a 3-1 win against Samaria Ladies.
Anima’s strikes sank city rivals, Fabulous Ladies, just as Mustapha’s goals earned all three points for Soccer Intellectuals against Immigration Ladies.
Indeed, the manner in which the season kicked off could be an indication of how exciting this season’s competition would be, given that goals were registered at all centres with the exception of the Carl Reindorf Park at Dansoman where Police Ladies were held to a goalless draw by visiting LadyStrikers.
In other results, debutantes Kumasi Academy Ladies travelled to Wa to beat Real Upper Ladies 2-0, Northern Ladies and Prisons Ladies played to a 1-1 draw in Tamale, while Soccer Intellectuals beat Immigration 2-0, with Elmina Sea Lions also winning 2-0 against newcomers, Holy Royals.
