The Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), George Blankson, says the performance of athletes from the Customs Division of the Authority at the international level will spur Ghana on to a favourable position for a huge medal haul in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
He said his outfit would continue to promote and finance sports development to nurture, grow and develop athletes for the national cause. The sports department of the Customs Division of the GRA has chalked up many successes in recent times, including a gold medal in the West African Top Eight Basketball Champions League held in Benin, bronze in the women’s division of the African Club Championship hosted in Uganda, and silver by the men’s hockey team in the RYA Vaisakhi Hockey Cup held in Kenya.
Other laurels include bronze by marathon runner, Godwin Adukpo, at the Bank of Africa International Marathon in Bamako, Mali.
Presenting their trophies to the Commissioner General at the GRA office in Accra recently, Benjamin Baafi, head of sports at GRA, appealed to the Commissioner-General for additional athletes to top up existing players who are beginning to fade out.
He noted with grave concern the lack of policy direction in attracting sports talents to the sports department of the authority over the years and called for a change in policy direction.
According to Mr Baafi, most GRA athletes are recruited for the national cause and, therefore, to feature in international competitions for the country, adding that plans must be afoot to recruit budding talents to add to the existing old players.
He expressed gratitude to the management of GRA for supporting sports in the sector and appealed for more support.
