A former national team player, Alhaji Karim Starboy, is calling for a conscious development and support for grassroots football to help unearth talents for the development of the local game.
Karim Starboy, a former player of Real Tamale United (RTU), who also played for Ghana in the 1972 Munich Olympics Games against Cote d’Ivoire, said he was a product of grassroots soccer and therefore his advocacy for grassroots football in the country was to harness talents to play for the national teams.
Alhaji Karim, stated this in an interview with the Graphic Sports at the Tamale Sports Stadium during a presentation of football kit and training equipment to Bawku United Football Club (FC), formerly Tamale All Stars, a division one side by the Minister of Youth and Sports and Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, last Friday.
The items included 10 footballs, four sets of jerseys, 30 pairs of football boots, cones among others.
The Coach of Bawku United, Abdulai Danjumah, later in an interview said it was the objective of the team to qualify for the premiership and welcomed the takeover by the sports minister.
The captain of the team, Sulemana Zuberu, who received the items on behalf of his colleagues thanked, Mr Ayariga, the new owner of the club for the support and pledged that they would not let the team down.
