GFA ExCo elections: RFAs take their turn

THE casualties and the manner in which they fell during last Tuesday's Premier League and Division One League (DOL) elections to select representatives to the Executive Committee of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) seem to be causing some panic as the Regional Football Associations (RFAs) take their turn beginning today.

In the three working days, delegates at the RFAs will be voting to choose the 10 chairmen who will serve on the FA’s ExCo.

Many of chairmen are being challenged and, therefore, seem a bit nervous in the wake of casualties that emerged in the Premier League and Division One League (DOL) elections.

Efforts to overturn the decision by the Election Committee to give the green light for all contenders to run did not succeed, heightening the tension that is building up ahead of the election.

Apart from Osei Tutu Agyeman (Ashanti), Abdul Lawal Ganiyu (Eastern) and Upper West's Alhaji Daudi Sadugu Yahaya, who need popular acclamation to be declared winners as they stood unopposed, all the others are being challenged, making it dicey for them.

Over the past few days, many of them have intensified their campaign in a bid to avoid losing by a breath's hair, or massively, as it happened to GFA vice president, Fred Crentsil or Kudjoe Fianoo, the CEO of Ashgold, who lost the DOL and Premier League elections respectively.

While the chairmen like M.N.S. Doe (Central), Salifu Shaibu Zida (Upper East) and Nii Kormiete Doku (Greater Accra) look set to retain their positions, it is quite shaky for the rest, as delegates insist their chairmen have not worked hard to merit being re-elected.

Kojo Yankah, the Western Region chairman, being challenged by Anthony Osei. However, Yankah remains confident of retaining his seat and insists, contrary to what was being peddled around, he has worked hard to retain the confidence of his delegates for another term.

Nii Kormiete Doku, who was elected mid-way into their term to replace the late Jordan Anagblah, insists he is still the man for the Greater Accra Region and does not see his challengers, Eugene Jacquaye and Mohamed Aminu Dauda threatening.

"I guess what we have done in the region is there for all to see. I respect the other contenders, but I think I've worked hard to get the nod for the second term," he said.
