FEATURE: Looking to leave a lasting legacy with Olympics, the story of Quaye brothers
Just like Richard Kingson and Laryea Kingston, football has been in the genes of Great Olympics duo Maxwell Quaye and Samuel Quaye since childhood.
While the Kingston brothers had their father blazing the trail at Olympics, the Quaye siblings had no such luxury as their father played for local sides within the La locality in Accra.

Growing up, Maxwell and Samuel played football together and that has really helped in their ability to gel whenever they are on the field.
The duo have combined to help the Wonder Club since the commencement of the ongoing season and are expected to play significant roles in the club’s quest to finish in the top four at the end of the season.
In 2015, Maxwell, the elder brother of the duo, joined Olympics in the Division One League under coach Yaw Acheampong and is the only player from that squad left in the team now.
“I was very young when I joined the team in the 2015-2016 season and we managed to qualify back into the Premier League,” Maxwell told the Graphic Sports.
“It’s been a very fruitful journey with Olympics and I have really enjoyed my stay at the club. I think the experience I have garnered over the years is really helping me this season,” he added.
Maxwell might be right. His composure and technique on the field has been an exceptional one, especially when playing alongside his younger brother Samuel.
“I have been playing football with my brother since childhood and that is what has really contributed to our good performance on the field.
“When he started, he used to disregard opponents but I took it upon myself to help him grow up and that has really helped him.”
Samuel confirmed his brother’s statement and revealed that he had the chance to play for Olympics at the same time his brother was signed but he was overlooked due to his young age.
He was then shipped to Godwin Attram’s Attram DeVisser Soccer Academy where he played to gain experience before joining his brother at Olympics.
“I have been playing football since I was eight years old. I have played with my elder brother for a very long time and that really helps us whenever we are on the field.
“It wasn’t easy for me when I came and I had to change my style of playing to suit the intensity of the Premier League. My brother helped me so much to adapt quickly,” Samuel told the Graphic Sports.
Despite their impressive start to the league campaign, they still have a lot to do to be able to emulate other successful football brothers in the country.
The likes of Ayew brothers (Andre and Jordan) and Gyan brothers (Baffour and Asamoah) come to mind whenever you think of such interesting stories.
Maxwell and Samuel have a similar goal and that is to play to the highest level of the sport. It will be a dream come true for them to feature for the national team.
“It has been one of our goals to play together in the national team and that will be an honour. I believe that can only be achieved by giving our best to get to the top,” the two stated.
Meanwhile, Samuel will begin his national assignment with the U-20 side when they compete at the African U-20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania with the Black Satellites.
That could offer him the opportunity to prove himself at the international stage.
“I am glad to have achieved one of my targets by getting the chance to feature for the Black Satellites and I hope to take the opportunity,” said Samuel.
“It is a big stage and I am ready to prove myself. We have so many good players in the team and I believe we can make a mark at the tournament,” he added.
As he marks his international journey, Maxwell will stay back to make a name for himself on the local scene with Olympics.
The major one is to continue helping Olympics in their quest to finish in the top four.
“It is every team’s target to win the league title but our focus is to finish in the top four at the end of the season.
“We know how difficult it is going to be but with Coach Annor Walker behind us, we will achieve our target,” Maxwell stated.
