The senior national team, the Black Stars, gearing up for thier AFCON qualifier against Uganda on Saturday, last Tuesday received their worst reception ever in Kumasi as both players and handlers were hooted at, describing them as ‘nation wreckers’.
The team had began training at the Baba Yara Stadium barely 24 hours after the arrival of most of the foreign-based players but for the greater part of the session, the team was subjected to verbal attacks.
The fans, apparently angered by the disastrous performance of the team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, had laid in wait for hours at the main entrance of the Baba Yara Stadium when news broke that the players were scheduled to train at the stadium.
Minutes after entering the stadium, the few fans followed almost immediately and constantly harassed and frustrated the players from the stands with intermittent hooting and insults.
They insisted the Stars only went to Brazil to squander the nation’s money.
It took the intervention of skipper Asamoah Gyan who humbly approached the fans to apologise on behalf of his teammates for the Brazil 2014 fiasco and assured them that ‘we will make amends against Uganda on Saturday.’
But the player could hardly end his statement when another group believed to be a friend of Ghanaian Hip life musician and a long-time friend of Gyan, Castro, yelled at the skipper to produce the musician because they alleged the player had used the musician for rituals.
But before they could descend on the player, a team of police officers arrived at the stadium to drive the fans away.
