EXCLUSIVE: GFA yet to engage Nketiah on national switch

The Ghana Football Association is yet to officially commence negotiation for the nationality switch of English-born Eddie Nketiah.

The 21-year-old striker with Ghanaian parentage came on as a sub to assist Arsenal come from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in the FA Cup final played at Wimbledon last Saturday.

Following that feat, the local football governing body tweeted to congratulate Nketiah, heightening speculations that the GFA was interested in wooing the player to consider a nationality switch.

Reports stated that the gesture by the FA was a way of warming the heart of the player to get him into the Black Stars after he was snubbed by the Black Starlets in 2017.

However, the Communications Director of the FA, Henry Asante Twum, told Graphic Sports yesterday that he was not aware of any negotiation between the GFA and the player.

“The player tweeted and we re-tweeted and congratulated him for winning the FA Cup, that’s all but I am unaware of any negotiation going on to help the guy to switch nationality,” he stated.

He emphasised that if any such thing would happen, it would take a request from Coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor first, then the FA would proceed from there.

“Before the FA would seek for his nationality switch a request must first come from the coach, then the FA would look into it and engage the player,” he stressed.

The Ghanaian striker, who is yet to decide on his international future, has represented the English national team at the U-18, U-19, U-20 and U-21 levels and contributed some 27 goals in 29 appearances.
