Ghanaian Olympique Marseill midfielder Andre Dede Ayew has begun his two-month recuperation after undergoing a successful operation on a torn meniscus in his knee.
The surgery was conducted in Marseille last Monday by Dr Jean-Pierre Franceschi and was described as successful.
“Andre Ayew has been operated on successfully,” a statement on the club’s official website read.
“Andre will leave hospital tomorrow [Tuesday] and his unavailability is estimated at about two months.”
The attacking midfielder suffered the injury after he twisted his knee playing for the Black Stars in the World Cup playoff against Egypt a last week. He was subsequently replaced by Mubarak Wakaso in the second half of the match which Ghana lost 2-1 but qualified for next year’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil on a 7-3 aggregate.
According to the French club, the combative player is expected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks and be ready for a return to competitive action at the end of January.
Meanwhile, Marseille are seeking €600,000 (about $1million) in compensation from FIFA for Ayew's injury on international duty for Ghana.
According to RMC Radio, Marseille have asked football’s world governing body to be compensated because the player was on international duty in a FIFA event.
Under the FIFA insurance policy, after the 28th day of injury, the club will receive €20,548 for everyday the player is injured, which in Ayew's case, will be two months.
That compensation is linked directly to a player’s earnings.
