Clubs to play league behind closed doors?

The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has been considering playing the 2020/2021 league season behind closed doors in order to get the clubs busy again.

The GFA has set the second week of October as the kick-off time for the 2020/2021 league season.

At an Executive Council meeting last week to discuss the possibility of changing the format of the various leagues in view of the current pandemic, a suggestion came up to play the matches behind closed doors at some centres to be selected by the FA.

In view of this, the GFA has decided to open the next football transfer window from Saturday, August 15, 2020 to Saturday, October 31, 2020, in accordance with the GFA regulations.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many sporting activities in the country, including football, were brought to a halt leading to the eventual cancellation of the 2019/2020 football season.

For the past two seasons, the GFA has not been able to organise any effective league due to the reforms embarked upon by FIFA.

While the 2017/2018 league season was truncated by the Anas Number 12 investigation on corruption in Ghana Football, the 2019 season saw the Normalisation Committee organise a Special Competition to select the nation’s two representatives for the CAF competitions.

It is on that basis that the GFA fell on Asante Kotoko and Ashantigold to represent the nation again in the 2019/2020 CAF Champions League and Confederartion Cup, respectively.
