Ashia wins day for Liberty

A sublime strike by Kennedy Ashia in the 49th minute handed Liberty Professionals a 1-0 victory over Ebusua Dwarfs at the Carl Reindorf Park yesterday.

The former Black Satellites star latched onto a through pass from outside the Dwarfs penalty box, caught goalkeeper Collins Addo off his line and chipped the ball into the roof of the net for the match winner.

Ashia’s goal was the tonic the home side needed to turn around their game after they were tormented throughout the first half by relegation-threatened Dwarfs  who failed to take their chances.

Dwarfs, handled by former Liberty coach J.E. Sarpong, started on a promising note and their central defensive pair of Vincent Atingah and Ricky Adjei Mensah were resolute at the rear as they kept Liberty’s Ashia and Daniel Kordie at bay.

But the ‘Scientific Soccer Lads’ returned from recess with a different game plan, as Ashia and Kordie were frequently freed by Moro Iddrisu, which resulted in increased pressure on Dwarfs, leading to the goal.

Moments after the goal, Dwarfs’ Isaac Kwain forced a brilliant save from Liberty’s goalie, Stephen Kwaku, who laboured to push away the goal-bound shot, after which teammate Joe Esso also watched in agony as his header narrowly missed the crossbar.
