Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Chairman, Lepowura Alhaji M.N.D Jawula, says Black Stars Coach, Kwasi Appiah, will need technical support from top-class coach to help him succeed at the 2014 World Cup.
Consequently, Alhaji Jawula is advocating the GFA hires the services of a tactician with previous World Cup experience to operate in the background and help Coach Appiah when he leads the Stars to Brazil next year.
According to the former GFA capo, Appiah would needs a strong technical unit, comprising people who will support the head coach, rather than take over the technical direction of the team, suggesting a personality such as Marcel Desailly or any other would be an appropriate candidate for that advisory role.
“I look forward to seeing Appiah in charge of the Black Stars at the World Cup, but he will need help to succeed at that level," Alhaji Jawula told the Graphic Sports in an interview.
"We should be honest and not behave like ostriches. Kwasi Appiah only has that kind of World Cup experience as an assistant coach [to Milovan Rajevac], so he will need strong support to face other big name coaches in Brazil in order to successfully take the Black Stars beyond their previous performances at the World Cup.
"I don't advocate for a technical director as has been suggested elsewhere. I'm looking at a situation where the supporting technical unit will work in the background to provide strong support to help Appiah succeed. He should have a team with a vast World Cup experience to support and advise him because he can't do it all by himself”.
“He will not be the first person to have that kind of assistance. It may not be known to the world, but the likes of the Spanish Coach, Vincent Bosque, and Felipe Scolari of Brazil all rely on such supporting role at big tournaments such as the World Cup," Alhaji Jawula explained.
Last week, the GFA denied rumours that they were in the process of hiring German cCoach, Klaus Topmoller, to serve as the team’s technical director for the World Cup, insisting that the Stars’ World Cup preparation would be discussed after the team had qualified for the tournament.
Ghana defeated Egypt 6-1 in the first leg of the qualifying playoff in Kumasi with the return leg scheduled for Cairo on November 19.
