Akonnor sure of Ashgold’s survival

Coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor and his players have plunged into intense training to strategise on how to escape relegation as the Obuasi-based Ashantigold face the threat of dropping to Division One.

With only six matches to end the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League, Ashgold are pegged at the 12th position with 31 points and need a lifeline to stay afloat.

Despite their predicament, Coach Akonnor has high hopes that Ashgold would survive and participate in the Premier League next season.

In an interview with Kwese Sports last Tuesday, Coach Akonnor was emphatic that their chances of survival were positive.

“We will survive because the signs are good for survival,” he assured.

He was, however, quick to add that the points separating Ashgold and teams lying below and above them were very close, hence the need to continue working hard to survive.

“The points are very close, so we need to work hard to keep afloat. I am now working very hard to develop strategies that would enhance our survival and so far, my players are responding positively and ready to deliver when the league resumes.” he noted.

According to him, he was confronted with numerous challenges when he took over, but as a former player who knew the terrain, he managed to calm the storm.

It was very hectic in the beginning because of the state of affairs at the time I took over, but that is behind us now,” he recalled.

“There were challenges among the fans, players and management, as well as the technical team, but as we speak now the supporters, management and players have a good understanding on the way forward.

“They also respect me because I have been there before as a player of Ashgold, hence my initial success,” he added.
