Five swimmers receive COVID-19 financial support

The beneficiary athletes --  Kow Asafua Jackson, Rebecca Asare, Papa Yaw Poku-Dwumo, Maayaa Ayawere and Slow Gwira -- will receive monthly allowances of GH¢500 from September until the end of the year as a support package announced by the government to alleviate the plight of athletes affected by the pandemic.

At a presentation ceremony at the Accra Sports Stadium last Thursday, the GSA President, Theo Wilson Edzie, said the allowance would support individual training by the athletes as their livelihoods had been affected by the global crisis.

He added also that the support would encourage the athletes to work hard on their training throughout their preparation towards the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games and other competitions.

Mr Edzie explained to the Daily Graphic that the association submitted the names of nine athletes to the Youth Employment Agency, but only four were given support, so the association decided to find resources to support the others left out of the government’s package.

"Just as the government is doing for the other athletes, the association also decided to support those who were omitted from the list by paying the same amount to them from September to December.

"We have put training programmes in place for the athletes to help them with preparations ahead of the Olympic Games next year,” he added.

Even though the government has eased restrictions on sporting competitions it imposed last March to check the spread of the virus, the GSA president indicated that they would not organise any major programme in the country until next year.
