Nettey, Wahab, Ansah are ripe for world title shots - Quartey

Famous boxing trainer and manager Charles Quartey believes three of his proteges, Joseph Akai Nettey, Oluwaseun Wahab and Michael Ansah, are game for world title shots this year.

He also affirmed that the nation would get at least two world champions before the climax of the year.

“Joseph Akai Nettey has a great potential to become a world champion and I think he is on the right track.

"I’m hoping he will get to the pivot of his career this year," the 50-year-old known trainer of Charles Quartey Gym, near Timber Market in Accra, told Graphic Sports in an exclusive interview last Thursday.

Nineteen-year-old undefeated light flyweight national champion, Akai Nettey, is scheduled to fight in late February against an unknown opponent.

Barely a month ago, Akai Nettey (4-0-0) stopped challenger Prince Boah at the Idrowhyt Centre at Dansoman in Accra to win the national light flyweight title.

In addition to the national title is a Luxembourg-owned Royal Boxing Organisation (RBO) title which Nettey currently possesses.

Undefeated Wahab is also gearing up to challenge the best in the world in the super-featherweight division.

Wahab, 23 (22-0-0), a Ghana-based Nigerian, last fought and defeated Tanzanian Jackson Malinyingi via a technical knockout decision at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra on December 25 last year.

Veteran lightweight juggernaut, Michael ‘One Bullet’ Ansah, who is on a three successive winning streak, is scheduled for an eliminator in the United Kingdom. A win for him will increase his chances at a world title shot.

Mr Quartey believes the trio are Ghana’s best prospects now and that with a little effort, they can become world champions sooner than later.

“Boxing is a process and not an event and I believe strongly that with time and hard work, everything will fall in line,” he said.
