Lawson hints at comeback after 8-year absence
FORMER World Boxing Council (WBC) international silver welterweight champion, Frederick Okunka Lawson, has said he is making a return to the country after eight years of sojourn in the United States to face off with an opponent in the welterweight division.
Lawson, 33, who last fought and lost to American Charles Hatley in the United States in September last year, promised his fans in Ghana that they would see a much better Okunka than he left the shores of the country eight years ago.

“I will be in Ghana in the coming weeks to stage a big fight. My next fight is in Ghana and I can’t wait to see my fans,” he told Graphic Sports in an exclusive telephone conversation last Wednesday.
He revealed that he had been feverishly training since relocating to the States and was very focused on his boxing career.
“I am currently based in Portland, Oregon, and work at a hospital with an ambulance team but always focus on my main career which is boxing,” he explained.
Lawson, popularly referred to as ‘General Okunka’ in boxing circles, has fought 31 times as a professional boxer with three defeats, 28 victories and 21 knockouts.
He came into the limelight in 2011 when he technically knocked out compatriot Nii Akrofi at the Salenko Beach Resort in Accra in a six-round welterweight contest.
The orthodox boxer subsequently left Ghana for the United States in 2015 where he lost to Canadian Kevin Bizier in the United States, recording his first professional loss.
However, little has been heard of the boxer, who is described by boxing fans as Ghana’s next Ike Bazooka Quartey, since then.
Lawson disclosed that he was still fighting as a boxer and appealed to his fans to continue supporting him.
