Clottey on the come-back trail

Former world champion, Joshua Clottey, is set for a return to the ring as he takes on Anthony Mundine of Australia in a World Boxing Association (WBA) International light-middleweight title bout in April 2.

The bout will be staged at the Entertainment Centre in Newcastle, New South Wales in Australia in what the 36-year-old Ghanaian has described as  “a major warm-up towards a major fight”.

On his Facebook wall last Thursday, Mundine, 38, wrote: “Just announced I’m  fighting Joshua Clottey on April,2 at the Newcastle Centre. Tough fight but gotta get it done.”

Clottey, a former  International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight  champion, will be about the toughest opponent for the Sydney-based boxer whose 46-5 (27Kos) fight record makes him an impressive match for the Grand Master.

“It is an important fight for me, not just in terms of the title at stake, but also in terms of keeping in shape for a potentially big fight in the near future,” Clottey told Graphic Sports.

It will be his second fight in seven months, but just the third fight in three years after he went the whole of 2012 without  a fight.

“A few things are happening on the quiet, and I believe this fight will shape things up for the better,” he added, insisting, however, that lack of regular ring action would not translate into ring-rustiness for him.

Indeed, a few of Mundine’s followers had questioned the credibility of the fight.

But one of Mundine’s fans responded: “Clottey is real good and will give Mindine a real fight. Clottey has fought  big big fights, including Manny Pacquiao.”
