Ayittey Powers — Set to explode tonight

Can Powers restore lost glory tonight?

Yellow-haired dreadlocked boxer, Ayittey Powers, will tonight seek another milestone in his career when he faces hard-hitter, Anicet Amoussou, from Benin in a promising thriller.

The bout, dubbed “The Return of the Dragon”, marks the return of Powers into the ring after his ill-fated defeat to his fellow Bukom fighter, Braimah Kamoko, aka Bukom Banku, last May at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Today’s 12-round West Africa light heavyweight title fight also highlights the first championship bout for promoter Alhaji Adamu Fatah, an industrialist who has vowed to turn around the fortunes of boxing this year.

While the venue for the bout, Unity Park at Tantra Hill at Achimota in Accra, may be new to boxing fans, its green astro-turf and brightening floodlights create a fantastic ambience for boxing lovers.

As has always been the case when boxing moves from its natural home at Bukom and James Town in Accra to another vicinity, the night is expected to be charged with the attraction of new boxing converts from the Tantra Hill neighbourhood.

The two boxers on the main bill of the five-bout thriller have promised to put up a good fight to give the fans their money’s worth.

Powers has vowed to quit the sport if he loses tonight, while Amoussou has warned Ghanaians to expect the shock of their lives.

Powers, whose fight with Kamoko rekindled national interest in the sport, has signed a three-fight contract with soccer academy side, Unity Park.

Quite understandably, promoter  Fatah really expects a good show to begin with in his maiden investment in the sport.

The night will also witness other interesting international bouts like the one between the “Pride of Kwahu”, Emmanuel Danso, aka Kwahu Tyson, and Nigerian Basil Osigwe in another light heavyweight contest.

Ghana’s Michael Barnor clashes with Beninois Fattiou Fassinou in a 10-round WBC International Silver Championship title.

Another major fight on the bill  is a Commonwealth welterweight eliminator between Benjamin Ashley and Joseph Lamster. The winner of the bout, according to the organisers, will meet British Frankie Gavin for the ultimate title.
