Bombers coach for AIBA course

Black Bombers coach Vincent “Washington” Akai Nettey, is expected to fly out of the country for a three-star coaching course in the Italian capital of Rome on Sunday.

The August 5-9 course is being pre-financed by  the Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation (GABF) President, Ray Quarcoo

Mr Quarcoo who is also Ghana’s Goodwill Sports Ambassador said that as part of the federation’s strategic medium-term plan, initiatives had been taken to revamp the  technical  department  to meet  the current standards set by International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) the Federation.

AIBA, he indicated, had instructed all affiliate federations that coaches without a three-star AIBA certificate by  December 31, 2013, would not be allowed at the ring corners of any international tournament.

And to ensure  that Ghana meets the international body’s demands, some coaches have been identified for training, with discussions underway with the Ghana Olympic Committee for possible sponsorship for their training.

Ambassador Quarcoo lamented that so far the country had only one three-star coach in the person of Ofori Asare, head coach of the national team, Black Bombers.

“If we do not take this initiative seriously, then our coaches cannot make it to international competitions because they lack the requisite qualification to be there,” Mr Quarcoo said.

“I will ensure that as many coaches as possible acquire the needed coaching skills to revamp the sport.

“I was, therefore, saddened when it came to my notice that the National Sports Authority could not fund Mr Nettey’s trip. But we cannot always wait on the government all the time so we need to sacrifice a bit.”
