Awinongya Jnr supports HIV orphans

America-born Ghanaian fighter Joseph Awinongya Jnr has donated $500 to the Motherly Love Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Accra, which caters for orphans with HIV.

Presenting a dummy cheque to the Motherly Love Foundation last Saturday, Mustapha Nettey, a representative of the 13-year-old amateur fighter, said the youngster decided to support the NGO based in Ashaiman where his father grew up in order to form a strong bond with the people in that area.

Purpose of donation

Mr Nettey explained that Awinongya Jnr was touched to support children living with HIV at Ashaiman after financially supporting Paulina Anokye to undergo surgery to remove a spinal tumour in July.

“The main aim of this young and enterprising boxer is to touch base with the people of Ashaiman where his father grew up,” Mr Nettey noted.

“He is very passionate about helping the less-privileged in society and he does this through some of the financial assistance he receives from donors in the US,” he added.

NGO’s response

Reverend John Azumah, founder of Motherly Love Foundation, received the donation and thanked the Awinongya family for the support and promised to utilise the money well.

He also called on other institutions and individuals to support orphans in society to help them lead decent lives.

“I want to thank you for the kind gesture and I promise to make good use of the money for the benefit of every child in this home,” Rev. Azumah said.

Commendation

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, Albert Okyere, commended Awinongya Jnr and his parents for giving back to society.

Mr Okyere hailed the young boxer for remembering his roots and also called on him to work harder to realise his dreams of becoming a world champion.

“This is a good thing to do and for a young boy of his age to remember the roots of his father is something special. I wish him well in his boxing career,” Mr Okyere noted.

For his part, Carl Lokko, Technical Director of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), promised to help introduce the sport to the people of Ashaiman should they get a boxing gym in the area.
