Agbeko’s opponent is formidable — GBA boss

The president of the Ghana Boxing Association (GBA), Peter Zwennes, has described Joseph Agbeko’s opponent; Guillermo Rigondeaux, as being in a “formidable position” ahead of their December 7 clash in Atlantic City, USA.

Mr Zwennes, who was referring to the Cuban boxer’s fight record which stands at 12-0 with 8 KOs, but revealed that Agbeko had assured him he was working very hard to shock the boxing world on that night.

“We’ve had occasion to talk to Agbeko who is currently training in Las Vegas and he’s happy with his new team headed by Roger Mayweather. It’s a very important fight for him against Rigondeaux who is a very strong and experienced boxer, he (Rigondeaux) has annexed both the WBA/WBO super bantamweight titles after only 12 fights which puts him in a formidable position.”

“Agbeko is equally aware of the magnitude of the challenge and has assured us he is training very hard to overcome the challenge, the GBA has sent words of encouragement and are hopeful that we will send a delegation together with government to go and support him on that night,” he said.

The GBA boss would, however, not be drawn into a prediction for the fight saying, “I am not in a position to predict except that Agbeko tells me he is well prepared to surprise all the pundits on the night of the bout”.
