Ongoing GUSA Games: UG sweeps athletics medals

The University of Ghana (UG) athletics team won 23 medals in the athletics competition at this year’s Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in the Ashanti Region.

The Accra-based university won gold in 100m men, 200m women, 400m men and women, 1,500m men, 4x100m men, javelin women, discus men, high jump men and long jump men.

New record
A level 400 student, Cadman Evans Dufu Yamoah, also broke the games record in the high jump with a jump of 2.11 metres to obliterate the previous record of 2.05 metres. Interestingly, Yamoah, who is a beneficiary of the University’s Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS) policy, set the previous record.

He told Daily Graphic that he was excited about setting the new record and hoped to compete for the country at any international competition.

“I am delighted to win my second GUSA gold medal in high jump and set the record for two consecutive times. Ebenezer Gyimah of the University of Cape Coast gave me a stiff competition, but I was determined to write my name and that of UG in gold,” he said.

Silent policy
The director of Sports at the UG, Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, said his silent policy of investing in talents and honing the skills of athletes had paid off.

“This is the manifestation of a silent and patient investment. It means we are doing something right to beat even those universities that specialise in physical education and sports.”

“This is the result of what we are doing. I personally feel fulfilled, and thank you to Team UG; from Senior Management to the student athletes,” he noted.

The Head of athletics for coaches at the Sports Directorate of the University in charge of field events, Mr Emmanuel Bruce-Okine Jr, called for more training time for student athletes than previously given, especially for female athletes.

Mr Augustine Amissare, Senior Assistant Registrar at the Sports Directorate, who credited the feat to the well-structured programmes and policies put in place by the Sports Directorate, with support from the senior management of the university, stated that the team’s performance would be carefully analysed and evaluated in order to strengthen it and make it more formidable for the national cause.
